Piotr Szumieł studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in his hometown of Warsaw and later with Wolfgang Klos and Johannes Meissl in Vienna. Alongside his career as a soloist and teacher, he has devoted himself intensively to the Apollon Musagète Quartet, founded in 2006. After winning First Prize and almost all special prizes at the 57th ARD International Music Competition in 2008, the quartet quickly established itself as one of Europe’s leading chamber ensembles.
From 2002 to 2008, Piotr Szumieł was Principal Viola of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dresden Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his performing career, he has been deeply committed to teaching for many years. Since 2019, he has been Professor of Viola and Head of the String Department at the University of Music and Theatre Rostock.
